Computing and Data in Practice
Course Description
Summary
For students doing work-study or internships, we will focus on three core areas of professionalization. First, each week will journal our work weeks, discussing and sharing our work experiences in a round-table. Second, we will build our professionalization skills, especially networking (in person and on LinkedIn), resume writing, and doing practice interviews. Finally, we will work on writing 5-year plans, to help us figure out where we鈥檇 like to be a few years after graduation. More specifically
- The roundtable portion would include talking about that week鈥檚 work, comparing the expectations at the job(s) and talking about key areas where the students are, or are not, well prepared.
- Evaluation for that section of the course is a reflection on the term.
- Professionalization will include developing tactics for building networking and resumes as well as outside speakers coming in to talk about their paths through the industry.
- Evaluation for this section of the course will be student resumes, LinkedIn profiles, and their participation in discussions with visitors.
- The five-year plan is an essay explaining where the students want to get to in their careers, critically assessing where they are, and listing the skills they want to develop.
This course is open to students working on- and off-campus and at any stage of their coursework. Re-taking the course would help students refine their skills and documentation, while also giving them much needed training. Michael Corey is a data professional currently working in the blockchain/web3 industry. He has experience coaching individual contributors and managing at FAANG companies and start-ups. He will bring that experience to the class to provide a mix of coaching and instruction.
