OPEN TO THE PUBLIC | In a body of work once described by Judith Wilson as 鈥減ost-pop, post-minimal, and post-painterly鈥 where the artist operates 鈥渋n a space cleared by contemporary feminist, semiotic, black, and cultural studies,鈥 Ellen Gallagher鈥檚 conceptually and materially complex mixed media works continue to trouble the binaries associated with figuration and abstraction. Awarded the American Academy Award in Art (2000), Gallagher has twice participated in the Venice Biennale (2003; 2015) and held solo shows at Tate Modern (2013) and New York鈥檚 New Museum. Gallagher is represented in numerous public collections including the Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, MoMA, The Whitney Museum, and The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among others. She attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts (1992) and Skowhegan School of Art, Maine (1993). Recent work in collaboration with partner, Edgar Cleijne, will appear in the New Orleans triennial exhibition, Prospect.4 in fall 2017.
