First Year Reflections: Matilda Lee '28

Matilda Lee '28 studies prop construction and design at Bennington. She shared why she decided to attend Bennington and reflected on her favorite classes and memories from her first year.

How did you hear about Bennington, and why did you decide to attend?

I found out about Bennington when I was looking online at schools in Vermont. I chose to go to Bennington because of its flexible "build your own curriculum." I am studying prop construction and design, and this is something that most schools don't offer. Since I knew what I want to do, I wanted to dive right into prop making, and I liked that I could do that at Bennington.

What did you do for your first Field Work Term?

For my first Field Work Term, I interned with Alicia Mendez, who is a food stylist based in San Antonio, Texas. During the internship, I learned what it's like to be a food stylist on a daily basis.

Tell us about your favorite class from this year.

My favorite class was Mad Props with Technical Instructor Seancollin Hankins. I enjoyed this class because I was able to dive right into what I am interested in. For the final project, I made a faux banana split for the play The Other Half. This was the most exciting project I've worked on so far because faux food props is what I would like to focus on.

What are you looking forward to next year at Bennington?

I am looking forward to continuing my prop studies. This term, I wasn't able to take any classes about props, so I would like to focus more on prop construction and design.

Over my first year at Bennington, I have met so many amazing people and made so many amazing friends. I'm looking forward to continuing building these connections and having fun!
