Shakespeare: Comedies and Romances

LIT2392.01
Course System Home Terms Fall 2015 Shakespeare: Comedies and Romances

Course Description

Summary

In his comedies and in his late so-called "romances," Shakespeare presents us with the stage as a place of transformation and delight, of cognition and recognition.  In forests, islands, glades and gardens, the characters lose and find their lives and loves, and the magic of play-acting, of stage-craft itself, is the medium of discovery.  We will read and look at the plays through various lenses, with emphasis on the portrayal of gender and sexuality.  Students will read, discuss and write about the plays, along the way pondering such questions as: What is poetry?  What is prose?  What is comedy at all?
