Course Description

Summary

This course serves as an introduction to rhythms, chants and songs from Africa, Brazil, Cuba, Haiti, and the African Diaspora. Using indigenous percussion instruments, students will experience basic hand and stick drumming patterns along with techniques associated with rhythms from these regions. Performances are presented at music workshop, music festival, Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC), and the Village School of North Bennington (VSNB). Evaluations are based on retention and playback of information through performances, classroom work and written assignments for classroom presentation. Corequisite: Must participate in Music Workshop (Tuesday, 6:30 – 8:00 pm).
