Course Description
Summary
This seven week course explores the process of creating photographic negatives using the 19th century process of collodion on glass, commonly referred to as "wet plate" by its early practitioners. In addition to making negatives on glass using a large format camera, students will also explore the careers of noted photographers employing the collodion process such as Timothy O'Sullivan, Edouard Baldus, Francis Frith, and Linnaeus Tripe. We will also explore the glass plate holdings in the archives of nearby museums. Corequisite: Taking the History of Photography/19th century course is strongly suggested.
