Course Description

Summary

Peacebuilding is an intervention designed to prevent the start or resumption of violent conflict by creating a sustainable peace. This course proceeds in two overlapping tracks: the academic and the practical. We will explore the cultural, social, political, economic and psychological dynamics of peace and violence in specific contexts and with their own histories. We will examine the roles outsider/third parties can play in building peace while emphasizing the importance of local ownership of the process and the outcomes. Though looking throughout at specific cases, we will try to isolate key factors and dynamics from the real experiences of conflict.  In the experiential segment we will study and practice the spectrum of tools and approaches utilized by peacebuilders in different contexts.
