The Economics of Our Time
Course Description
Summary
In this seminar, we will dive into the complexities of today’s global economy, engaging with the most pressing economic challenges of our time. We will explore how economic policies, geopolitical dynamics, and global trends intersect, shaping the economic landscape. Through real-time data, contemporary research, and case studies, we’ll analyze the forces driving change and the key decisions shaping the future of the global economy.
Particular attention will be given to the role of the U.S. as a central economic player, examining how its policies navigate disruptions and influence both emerging markets and the broader global network. At the same time, we’ll emphasize the interconnectedness of national economies in an increasingly globalized world, understanding how economic shifts in one region impact others.
Designed to sharpen your critical thinking skills, this course connects theory with the rapidly evolving economic realities we face today. Through lively debates, in-depth discussions, and engaging case studies, you will develop the tools needed to assess the forces driving change and understand their far-reaching global implications.
The course has two primary requirements:
- Class Participation – You must attend all classes and engage deeply with assigned readings, reflections, and discussions.
- Critical Commentary and Presentations – You will write critical commentary papers that summarize and analyze the key aspects of a significant event or contemporary issue of global relevance in a specific country. In these papers, you will evaluate the broader implications and significance of the event. Afterward, you will present your findings to the class, leading a discussion designed to foster deeper analysis and exploration of the topic.
This course has no prerequisites and is open to all students interested in economic questions.
