Course Description

Summary

"An actor is a vessel to be filled so that she can then be poured into the audience's ear." Cicely Berry (Vocal Coach) As actors, our bodies and our imagination are our tools. We use voice, body, and spirit to breathe life into a story before an audience in order to transform them. For an audience to experience the full range and music of the text, we must be fine-tuned. In this class, we will do physical and vocal warm-ups and exercises based on the works of Linklater, Spolin, Adler, Bogart, and Kaufman, etc., in order to find and expand our own unique voices, to be more present in our bodies and to the elements on stage. We will do beginning script analysis and character work using scenes from Sam Shepard's Savage Love, Annie Baker's The Flick, and others TBD. We will read and discuss Yoshi Oida's wonderful theory book The Invisible Actor. There will be various assignments throughout the term, and an analysis of the film The Artist is Present about Marina Abramovic. Corequisite: Students must sign up for a Dance/Drama Lab.
