The course will be for sustained work on an animation or projection design project, and should be a space for both experimentation, ambition and consistent endeavor. The first half of the semester will be concerned with conceptualizing and framing the world of the animations or projections, by research, drawings, investigation, imagining. The second half will be creating the animation or projections.
The class will be both looking at abstraction as well as more figurative based work. The class will include a mixture of creating assemblages in a variety of means and materials, and using both digital and analogue means from paint, to sand to animated forms. Objects will be cut out with scissors or the laser cutter, animated with pins or digital pins in software (After Effects), layers will be used to create depth in three dimensions, a multiplane or using the Z axis.
The class will be concerned with animating inanimate objects by primarily stop motion. Locations will be constructed, objects to animated formed, and lighting explored in order to create the imaginary world. A variety of filmmakers and techniques will be looked at during the course of the semester, with individual research undertaken and presented. Students will be expected to produce a variety of short projects over the first seven weeks based on current affairs and future worlds, followed by a longer more sustained project.
Intermediate Video builds on the concepts and technical skills introduced in Intro to Video, and has a different theme each term. This semester of Intermediate Video will be focused on the following thematic, conceptual and formal questions.

From the inside, however, it is a complicated, often contradictory world where implicit codes and values shape the most basic aspects of daily life. This course will give you an insider鈥檚 perspective on a cultural and communicative system whose ideas, customs, and belief systems are surprisingly different from your own.

Why is a Mayan food, chocolate, such a high-stake product in French-speaking countries ?
French literature and film have always reciprocally inspired one another 鈥 as early as 1897, Lumi猫re represented the main characters of Hugo鈥檚 Les Mis茅rables. This course will offer students the opportunity to analyze literary representations of women and their film adaptations in terms of intermediality and intertextuality. Adaptations will include: La Princesse de Cl猫ves (La Fayette/Sauder), La Religieuse (Diderot/Rivette), La Noire de鈥 (Semb猫ne/Semb猫ne), La Prisonni猫re/La Captive (Proust/Akerman). Students will focus on various adaptation strategies and approaches.
An introduction to 16mm film techniques, students will shoot and edit analog 16mm film, develop by hand and finally will transfer film to video. Through screenings, experiments and hands-on workshops students will learn about cinematography and the photochemical process. Taking advantage of the special tactile, tangible nature of analog film, material properties will also be explored- direct tactile methods such as loops, paint/scratch on film and laser etching.
This semester-length, 2-credit course, intended for students who will continue to the Advanced Projects in Film/Video II course in spring 2023, supports advanced students in planning, pre-production, and early production (or for 8th term students, post-production and finishing) for more complex, larger-scale, longer-duration, self-directed film/video projects. It also includes a screening series where we watch and analyze feature and mid-length films.
This production course is designed to get students producing video immediately: we will look at basic techniques with an emphasis on simple and self-devised methods of media production, efficient approaches to lighting and sound, and emphasize quick turnover time to create a great amount of work in a relatively short period of time.
This production course introduces students to the fundamentals of working in video and the language of film form. Drawing on the energy, intensity and criticality of avant-garde film and contemporary video art practices, students will complete a series of projects exploring all basic aspects of film/video production (centered on DSLR cameras), such as cinematography, mise-en-sc猫ne, editing and sound design.
