Students work to develop vocabularies, resources and methodologies to support varied approaches to thesis practices to include research into practice, performance as research, practice into research, practice-based research, bibliography as method, citational fieldings and research as action. The course guides students through reflective, critical processes during one-on-one, small and large group course formats.
This topic driven seminar focuses on current developments within the field of dance and performance. Students will learn to think of dance and performance through their own embodied experiences and by placing dance, movement, and performance in wider disciplinary, cultural and global contexts.
How do cognitive neuroscientists examine words and word meanings? What are the different ways we can remember words, such as definitions (鈥減ollo鈥, 鈥渏i鈥, 鈥渃hicken鈥) and lyrics, and how do words work in our brains? Why do we sometimes struggle to remember a word that comes to mind easily later on? Are words and images stored together or separately in our brains? These questions and more will be addressed in this course, after an overview of the central nervous system.
How have psychologists defined feelings over the years, and how is the field continuing to change? We will begin with the 19th Century, when scientists like Wundt and Charcot brought human perception and mental health symptoms out of the realm of metaphysics. After briefly considering Darwin鈥檚 view of emotion and new perspectives on artwork from early asylums, we will evaluate emotion as featured in two central debates from the 20th Century: (1) the psychodynamic approach of Freud, one of Charcot鈥檚 students, versus humanism and (2) the behaviorists鈥 broad rejection of feelings a
The record of the processes and research practices take shape in the writing and designing of the artist鈥檚 book. The Research as Actions are discussed and planned. These actions are shared informally and at the conclusion of the term.
PODs offer students the opportunity to make connections through multiple access points, especially in areas of performance. PODs are designed to help students recognize the tools and methodologies used in their own creative work both as performers and as choreographers. Structurally each POD is identified by a unique topic. PODs have required rehearsal times and culminate in a public showing.
The artist will create an original work with BFA students through an intensive research and rehearsal process.

This seminar course explores and enacts multidirectional modes of research in and through dance. The course moves through lectures, workshops and experiments that activate processes of creation/performance and guide each student in the development of a portfolio of documents related to professional practice. Students will create social and public platforms for their research and engage in dialogues related to sustainability, equity, and possibility within the field of dance.
Each Practice + Process course is designed around the research/pedagogic interests of the faculty member leading the class. The overall curricular structure positions studio practice, creative process and critical reading, thinking and languaging as integrated elements within one course, enabling students to move between modes of learning, reflection and making.

This course explores the major theoretical orientations in counseling, including psychodynamic, humanistic, cognitive-behavioral, and integrative approaches. Students will study the principles, techniques, and application of each theory, gaining practical skills for working with diverse client populations. Emphasis is placed on developing a personal counseling framework and integrating theory with practice through role-plays and case studies.
