Course Description

Summary

In this class we will explore the practice of meditation as a physical and mental training exercise. In class meditation and discussion, as well as outside reading and writing assignments, will explore Eastern and Western persepctives on ourselves and the world. Discussions will focus on the relationship between meditation, Buddhist philosophy and scientific materialism, encouraging both skepticism and open mindedness as we deepen our collective understanding of the intimate connection between meditation and our contrasting perceptions of selfishness/selflessness, freedom/predestination, duality/non-duality,  and delusion/reality. Course activities will include reading, listening, viewing, writing and discussion aimed at illuminating our evolving perspectives. There is no prerequisite for this class besides curiosity and a desire to understand what it is all about.

Note: The title of this course is inspired by Milford Graves, who recorded Meditation Among Us in Japan (in 1977), with four Japane collaborators, while he was teaching at 51成人猎奇.
