Course Description
Summary
Bebop, Rock and Beyond surveys numerous drum set innovators, architects, and developers of the American drum set. Students will investigate multiple music genres from Swing, Bebop, Funk, Fusion, and Rock from drummers such as, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Ed Blackwell, John Bonham, Steve Jordan, and Cindy Blackman, to global approaches on drum set by artists, Alex Acuna, Terry Lynn Carrington, Daphnis Prieto, and many others who have contributed to the development, craft, and innovation of this artform. Students will be tasked with creating and developing rhythmic patterns (beats/grooves), advance their rudimental and independent stick control while advancing their improvisational concepts, as well as improve their reading of drum set notation. Reading notation is not required, but will be used in this course. Maintenance and tuning of the drums are key components to achieving a great sound. Students will be tasked with instrument maintenance while maintaining a clean and controlled rehearsal and practice environment.Prerequisites
Must be currently enrolled in a music course. Have studied drum set. A written statement outlining your strengths and areas that need development. Include a brief list of drummers you have been influenced by. Auditions will be held via zoom by appointment. Email mwimberly@bennington.edu.
