We will trace the history of collage in the visual arts and then investigate its impact on other fields, including film, music, literature and dance. The portfolio is developed to include a thoughtful and critically developed artist statement, current CV, written narratives of their work, press & public reviews, and a list of any grants, honorariums and/or fellowships along with the encouragement of a creative approach to sharing the emergence of themselves as dance artists.

What does it mean to think of our study of dance and performance as an encounter and how might that thinking offer up a chance for one to pay attention differently? These Labs take the form of intensive workshops and/or lectures.

As the means of production and circuits of distribution become ever more accessible to individuals, we have moved from an era of focused agitprop into a new era of diffused disinformation.

Language Documentation, Revitalization, and Reclamation — LIN4115.01

This course addresses the theories, methods, ethics, and actual outcomes of language documentation, revitalization, and reclamation work. Students will examine the causes and consequences of language endangerment, strategies for revitalization, and community-led initiatives in reclaiming linguistic and cultural heritage. Case studies from around the world will provide insight into real-world applications of language work and the diversity in form that this work takes depending on context.

Intro to 16mm — FV2312.01

An introduction to 16mm film techniques, students will shoot and edit analog 16mm film, develop by hand and finally will transfer film to video. Through screenings, experiments and hands-on workshops students will learn about cinematography and the photochemical process. Taking advantage of the special tactile, tangible nature of analog film, material properties will also be explored- direct tactile methods such as loops, paint/scratch on film and laser etching.

Advanced Film/Video Projects I — FV4476.01

This semester-length, 2-credit course, intended for students who will continue to the Advanced Projects in Film/Video II course in spring 2023, supports advanced students in planning, pre-production, and early production (or for 8th term students, post-production and finishing) for more complex, larger-scale, longer-duration, self-directed film/video projects. It also includes a screening series where we watch and analyze feature and mid-length films.

This production course is designed to get students producing video immediately: we will look at basic techniques with an emphasis on simple and self-devised methods of media production, efficient approaches to lighting and sound, and emphasize quick turnover time to create a great amount of work in a relatively short period of time.
