Scanning electron microscopes are a fundamental tool in the physical and life sciences. When equipped with an X-Ray spectrometer, a SEM can provide rapid physical and chemical data of specimens on extremely small scales. This class with cover the theory and practical applications of SEM imaging and analysis for advanced science students who have their own research interests. Students will be expected to develop and conduct an independent research project through this class.

Contemporary efforts to confront our most pressing ecological problems are characterized by a tension between the global realities of these problems and the territorial borders and logics that define sovereign nation-states. This course will explore this tension in three parts. First, we will engage with a variety of theoretical and conceptual debates introduced by scholars of global environmental politics 鈥 a heterodox field that draws insights from international relations theory, international political economy, ecological economics, and environmental sociology (among others).

This course explores the art and technique of mold making and its supportive processes.Think about all the teeth molds we make when we munch through our evening supper. Our mouths often act as molds to shape the pressures related to communication and speech.  This class will investigate processes related to many different types of molds, from making multiple plaster part molds to flexible silicone examples.

Today it is clear that the environment matters. In activism and scholarship and public policy, the environment has become a potent (if sometimes obligatory) point of reference. Less attention, however, has focused on the emergence of the environment itself as a converging field of action for advocacy, science, and statecraft. In this seminar, we will reflect not only on what we know of the environment but also on how we came to know the environment.

The Death and Life of Ash Trees: Emerald Ash Borer on the Bennington Campus — ENV2210.01

The ash trees on campus are dying from an introduced beetle. Ash trees make up about 8% of Vermont鈥檚 forests and their foliage contributes to our iconic fall colors. They are culturally important trees with deep connections to art from Indigenous basket making to Beyonce鈥檚 Louisville slugger in Lemonade. The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) beetle arrived in North America in Michigan in 2002; it was first confirmed on the Bennington campus in late 2024. The mortality rate of EAB-infested ash trees is 99.97%.

Plastic pollution has emerged as a significant environmental issue in the past few years, particularly on how plastics affects health, environmental justice, climate change and water quality.  This is an environmental policy class iwth a focus on public action.  This class will explore the dimensions of the production, use and disposal of plastics and the need for innovation.  In the spirit of 51成人猎奇's Center for the Advancement of Public Action (CAPA),much of the assigned homework will include taking public action.

This course is recommended for all students considering working in sculpture and interested in mild steel design/fabrication methods. It is open to anyone with a curiosity about materials and building processes. There are fundamental introductions to gas, arc, electric welding, forging, fabrication techniques like cutting and grinding steel, and general shop safety. Please note that this course may require additional materials to be purchased by the student, ex. Jacket, gloves, hat and safety glasses.
