The class will be both looking at abstraction as well as more figurative based work. The class will include a mixture of creating assemblages in a variety of means and materials, and using both digital and analogue means from paint, to sand to animated forms. Objects will be cut out with scissors or the laser cutter, animated with pins or digital pins in software (After Effects), layers will be used to create depth in three dimensions, a multiplane or using the Z axis.

Resonance -relating to sound, movement, space and time - — DAN4378.01

A class, a laboratory that explores the relationship between movement and sound, starting with the phenomenology of sound and acoustics, and considering the translation from sound to movement.

Incorporates listening techniques and sensory perception and encourages participants, through improvisation, to draw from movement, sound, space and memory interchangeably. They will be guided through exercises that help make decisions based on assessment, observation, listening and decision making.

Orchestration — MCO4133.01

A primer in orchestration, for students who are selected to write for Sage City Symphony. We will pore over the 19th and 20th century orchestral repertoire, getting to know instruments, ranges, and agilities. Analysis, piano reduction, and orchestration from grand staff will be used to internalize and hear orchestration. Students will be expected to create and get feedback on textural sketches of their future pieces.

This class will look at the intersection of photography and performance art inside the contributions of feminist and queer practices. Students will respond to different performance prompts, alternating between the roles of performers and photographers, and thinking about ways to use the camera as an artistic and documentation tool. They will also engage in readings and analysis of works from BIPOC, feminist, and queer authors and photographers from the global south.

Blockchain/Web3 as an evolution of the consumer web — CS2138.01

The large-scale consumer web has been defined by epochs. The first epoch was defined by the user as consumer: large companies created content which was consumed by the masses. The second web epoch (web 2.0) has been defined by consumer creators, large companies own and deliver content created by users to other users (Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, …). The third web epoch is—if you believe the hype—to be defined by self-ownership of content.

Advanced Projects in Immersion — MSR4372.01

A seminar based on student-initiated projects in immersive sound design, for students with previous experience in mixing, electronics, and production. A variety of platforms will be presented and made available, from soundscape composition, geotagging, 8-channel sound, 5.1/7.1, to environmental positioning of acoustic sources. 

The Death and Life of Ash Trees: Emerald Ash Borer on the Bennington Campus — ENV2210.01

The ash trees on campus are dying from an introduced beetle. Ash trees make up about 8% of Vermont’s forests and their foliage contributes to our iconic fall colors. They are culturally important trees with deep connections to art from Indigenous basket making to Beyonce’s Louisville slugger in Lemonade. The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) beetle arrived in North America in Michigan in 2002; it was first confirmed on the Bennington campus in late 2024. The mortality rate of EAB-infested ash trees is 99.97%.

This course is recommended for all students considering working in sculpture and interested in mild steel design/fabrication methods. It is open to anyone with a curiosity about materials and building processes. There are fundamental introductions to gas, arc, electric welding, forging, fabrication techniques like cutting and grinding steel, and general shop safety. Please note that this course may require additional materials to be purchased by the student, ex. Jacket, gloves, hat and safety glasses.
